Inclusive Church

A statement from our Ministers and Leadership team

"Following the recent judgment by the UK Supreme Court, The Methodist Church nationally published a statement on 28th April 2025:

Wesley Methodist Church supports that statement. In particular, we share the conviction that “The Methodist Church believes that all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have a place in God’s Church and trans people should always feel that they are welcome and loved.”

Wesley is part of the Inclusive Church, Open Table, and Church of Sanctuary networks. We are committed to being a community which provides a safe welcome for all. We want to be clear, therefore, that this unequivocally includes trans, intersex, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people - and that use of our building and its facilities is offered without judgement or assumptions being made.

We want to nurture a diverse and inclusive community here at Wesley. We are committed to doing this through our Sunday and midweek worship and through our many weekday activities.

The Methodist Church in Britain is also fully committed to inclusion:

“Just as God’s grace is for all, so is Methodism: all are welcome in the broadest sense. Hospitality, openness and welcome to all are at the heart of what it means to be a Methodist. A community is genuinely inclusive if that hospitality extends to every level of its life.”

From Towards an Inclusive Church

Wesley is a registered member of Inclusive Church, a national network of individuals and churches celebrating diversity and creating truly welcoming places and communities.

We have adopted an Equality and Diversity Policy to guide our life together.

The calling of the Methodist Church is to respond to the gospel of God's love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission.
